Season-closing triumph in GT2: RTR Projects secures a valuable result and the runner-up title

On Sunday, Maťo Homola and Lennart Marioneck claimed victory, while Petr Lisa secured the final silver in the AM standings. At the season finale of the GT2 European Series in Barcelona, RTR Projects battled successfully through technical challenges, with their KTM taking the win in the final race of the series.

“Overall victory was our target all season, and we’re delighted that we finally managed to achieve it,” breathed a sigh of relief Tomáš Fanta, RTR Projects’ team principal, after the Spanish weekend. The path to the top step, however, was far from easy. “We’ve been dealing with technical issues all season, and Barcelona was no different. I’m especially happy for Maťo, who endured it all with us, but also for the entire team and our mechanics. They did everything possible to make success happen. I’m glad it finally came together,” Fanta concluded.

From the very first sessions of the weekend, it was clear that RTR Projects were in top form in Spain. The KTM X-Bow performed flawlessly, and Lennart Marioneck, returning after a year-long break, quickly found his rhythm alongside Maťo Homola. The Slovak-German pairing impressed just as much as they had in Barcelona last year, when they secured two podiums in the PRO-AM class. Qualifying, however, suggested that this time their ambitions could be even higher.

In the battle for grid positions for the first race, Marioneck outpaced the competition by over a second, while in the second qualifying session, Homola missed out to Mauro Calamia in the Maserati by just 0.028 seconds, securing another front-row spot for RTR Projects. Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite as planned. In the weekend’s opening race, car number 89 was absent and couldn’t capitalise on its exceptional pace.

“Maťo’s data showed unusual readings after qualifying. We worked on it late into the night, but by Saturday morning the problem still persisted. We therefore decided not to take the start. We didn’t want to go out on the grid and risk damaging the car or somehow affecting the race until we were certain that everything was in order,” Fanta explained.

The strong team spirit at RTR Projects soon came to the fore. The mechanics worked on the car until three in the morning, and thanks to their efforts, Homola and Marioneck were eventually able to take the start. Just as it seemed the weekend was turning in their favour, another unexpected setback emerged, once again preventing the team from starting from the front row.

“Problems cropped up again. However, thanks to the time we spent in the pits and a subsequent installation lap, we were able to resolve them and take the start. Admittedly from the back, but we stayed in the pack, and that was the key for us,” Fanta explained.

Once the lights went out, Maťo Homola demonstrated just how the weekend could have unfolded had everything gone to plan. The Slovak rapidly carved his way through the field and, by the start of the pit window, was already running fourth on track. Ahead of him were only endurance veteran Pierre Kaffer, Reinhard Kofler in the second KTM X-Bow, and Freddie Tomlinson in the Ginetta. It was at the RTR Projects pit wall that a decision was made which would prove pivotal on the road to victory.

“Maťo had gotten stuck behind a car during his charge and had quite worn his tyres. Catching the top three was therefore difficult for him. That’s why we called him in earlier than planned. In the end, though, it worked out in our favour. Lenny had clear air and, thanks to that, was able to leapfrog two cars during the pit stops,” explained Tomáš Fanta.

By that point, it had become a straight KTM vs. KTM battle. Ahead of Marioneck was Marius Aigner from MZR, who had taken over from Reinhard Kofler. The decisive overtaking move came from Marioneck with 20 minutes remaining, using the slipstream on the main straight and completing his attack in the first corner. He crossed the finish line with a lead of over half a minute.

“If you put the pre-race issues aside, everything went really smoothly,” praised Marioneck, singling out his entire team, including his teammate. “The crew did a fantastic job during the pit stops. Maťo delivered an impressive opening stint, which allowed us to gain positions in the pits. I think we had strong pace throughout the weekend, and even on Saturday, we could have taken victory.”

Maťo Homola returned the praise to Lenny Marioneck. “It was excellent working with him. He’s a true professional, both as a driver and as a person. He hadn’t raced for a year, so it was tough at first, but he adapted incredibly quickly. He was fast right from the start and kept improving, even in some of the trickier corners,” the Slovak driver explained.

This marks RTR Projects’ second overall victory in the GT2 European Series. The Brno-based team has been competing in the championship since 2023. Their first outright win came last year at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, with Maťo Homola once again on board – back then sharing the KTM with Jan Krabec. It was Krabec who delivered another major milestone for the team, securing the AM class title in the 2023 season.

Homola wrapped up the 2025 season in fourth place in the Pro-Am class standings. Over the course of the year, he shared the car with four different teammates – first Laura Kraihamerová, then Davit Kajaia, followed by Viktor Mráz, and finally Lennart Marioneck. With each of them, he reached the podium at least once, while he personally stood on it five times.

Petr Lisa Secures Runner-Up Title

The RTR Projects team also celebrated in Barcelona thanks to the pairing of Petr Lisa and Ondřej Rokos in their Mercedes-AMG. The Czech duo secured third and second in the AM class, with Lisa officially sealing his runner-up title for the season.

“I’m really pleased,” the Czech driver said. “I want to thank the RTR Projects team for letting me be part of this season. Above all, I have to thank Ondřej – without him, I wouldn’t be in GT2. And of course, thanks also to Viktor Mráz, with whom I raced two rounds this year in the KTM.”

As Petr Lisa mentioned in his speech, not all of this year’s races were contested alongside Ondřej Rokos. Rokos missed the rounds at Spa-Francorchamps and Misano to spend time with his newborn daughter. This is why he cannot claim the runner-up title and instead finishes the season in fifth place overall.

Over the course of the season, Petr Lisa stood on the podium a total of nine times. Seven of those came alongside Ondřej Rokos, while two were achieved with Viktor Mráz in the KTM. It was with the Slovak driver, however, that he secured his best result of the year – the pair triumphed in the second race at Spa-Francorchamps. In the championship, only the dominant Philippe Prette in the Maserati finished ahead of Lisa, having won 10 of the 12 races.

Although missing two races denied Ondřej Rokos the runner-up title, it doesn’t change the fact that he looks back on his debut season in the GT2 European Series positively. “I feel that I’ve made huge progress this year. The improvement has been really significant. I owe that mostly to Petr and the entire RTR projects team, because without them I wouldn’t have achieved this in such a short time,” he reflects.

Petr Lisa echoes Rokos’s praise. “I think that in just two years he has put in so much work and shown such incredible progress—it’s almost unreal. I really take my hat off to him. What he delivered in Barcelona during qualifying was an absolutely phenomenal performance,” he commends.

That brings the 2025 GT2 European Series season to a close. The next season is set to kick off on 30–31 May, with the opening round taking place at Italy’s iconic Monza circuit.
